Let’s talk about blue light

Apr 28, 2023

Let’s talk about blue light in a special article. In short, blue light is a part of white light. It is impossible to completely avoid blue light, and the necessary blue light is also conducive to regulating our biological rhythm. The harm of blue light we talk about refers to excessive The blue light will cause certain harm, and it is not advisable to talk about the harm of blue light without the amount.

Photobiological safety is a relatively hot concept now. With the awakening of environmental awareness and health awareness, people are paying more and more attention to it. Cataracts are related to the damage of excessive infrared or ultraviolet rays to the lens, so do not be exposed to strong sunlight in the sun. The retina is also the most vulnerable part of the eye, for example, too strong light may cause damage to the retina.

Excessive blue light can also cause damage to the retina, which affects vision. These blue lights are mainly blue lights in the 400-500nm band, and they have been exposed to too much blue light. The main reason here is that the reaction caused by excessive blue light photochemical damage affects cell growth. It's not that the presence of blue light will cause harm, but it is related to the dose. So there are relevant standards to define blue light hazards. As long as the anti-blue light level meets the RG0 standard, it can be used with confidence. However, considering the characteristics of LED light sources, the standard recommends a long-term lighting environment, and it is recommended that the color temperature of LED lamps be less than 4000K. Especially for children, whose eyes are still relatively immature and in the growth stage, it is also recommended to use lamps with a color temperature of 4000k or below for lighting.

Excessive blue light hazards are related to the brightness of the light source, the characteristics of the light source, and the length of the gaze. For example, sunlight, if you stare at it for more than 0.5 seconds, it may cause blue light hazards, and even a 2700k incandescent lamp with a low color temperature, if you stare at it for too long, it will cause blue light hazards. Therefore, it is more important not to look directly at the light source for a long time. In addition, most of the current lamps use lampshades, which reduces the brightness of the light source and softens the light. The possibility of blue light hazards is greatly reduced. In addition, if the lamps meet the anti-blue light level Requirements, you can use it with confidence.

Lighting and Color

The color of the object we see is related to both the color of the object itself and the color of the light.

Color has three characteristics: hue, lightness and chroma. Instead of color, there is only one characteristic of lightness. When we talk about lighting, it is mainly the mixing of light of various colors, not the mixing of pigments to produce colors. Light mixing has certain rules in color, brightness and so on. For example, complementary color law, color substitution law, brightness addition law, etc. For example, red, green and blue are mixed into white light, etc., all conform to these laws. As for some control of color temperature, brightness, dimming, light mixing, etc., some of the complex algorithms are used to realize the control, that is, the light can be measured and controlled by numbers.

Lighting and Color Temperature

I will also focus on talking with you about the color temperature in a separate space. The color temperature actually reflects the color of white light, and it is not bad to say that the color temperature is the color. Because the color temperature reflects the color displayed by an absolute black body at a certain temperature, but the actual light is complicated, and the light of the same color temperature may look different to us, which introduces another concept of color tolerance. But generally speaking, the difference between the same batch of light sources with the same color temperature will be smaller, and the cost will be slightly higher for products with strict color tolerance requirements. For large manufacturers, due to the large production capacity, the batch screening will be more stringent, and the color tolerance of the same color temperature may be smaller. And for the average person, the color temperature difference within 500K will not feel so obvious or cause obvious discomfort.
